Pay for Sex
(or another take on Perspective) by Jana
I was watching an interview
this morning on a news magazine type show with the topic being the difference
between a man and a woman's concept of intimacy. Bottom line: for women, intimacy
leads to sex, for men sex leads to intimacy. Huh?
Yep, and it makes sense.
Intimacy is not just sex, intimacy is about giving, sharing and trusting on the
physical, spiritual and emotional levels. It's how we form relationships and for
women, intimacy comes prior to sex and for men, it comes after sex. I'm talking
relationships, not relations!
I grab my latte, switch off the T.V., turn
on my laptop and a news item jumps out at me simply titled "Monkeys Pay for Sex".
I will paraphrase here for the speed readers: female monkeys are three times more
likely to have sex with a male monkey, after he spends time grooming her. Uh??
This is news?
The article was written by a woman but the scientific point
of view in the study was male, and I can say right away, if I were a howler monkey
you'd have heard me from there! Here I was, freshly filled with the differences
in "relationships" and I immediately saw this glaring difference in points of
view. This guy looked at the monkey's activity from a completely male perspective.
I wonder if the scientist had been a female would the opinion be one of: female
monkeys are more inclined to mate, after male monkeys spend time grooming them?
If that was the case, would it have been NEWS?
As a woman I saw the monkey
sex stats less about rough trade and more about a female monkey having sex with
a male monkey who spends time doing something intimate like grooming. ( or foot
rubbing, or back massaging)
I mean let's put a human face on this - women
are three times more likely to have sex after a man gives her a foot massage…so
according to scientists, women are trading sex for pedal attention. Yep, but lets
not forget, males are trading foot massages for sex! And yes the article does
point out that it's a commodity exchange.
Now what does any of this have
to do with songwriting? Perspective. Does intimacy lead to sex, or does sex
leads intimacy.
I believe there are less women trying to write "male"
than men trying to write "female". Men you gotta' dig deep, tap into your emotions,
and women…well, you need to grow some balls!
Do your own sex trade.
