I'm back dear readers, and I had a wonderful time in Saint John not St Johns. Yes a few of you pointed out my error in a past newsletter and I thank you. I felt somewhat redeemed when on national television when Bruce Allen made the same mistake (fools seldom differ).

I couldn't count the number of folks who approached me to offer kudos to the Songbridge team and we thank you whole heartedly for your continued support!

On my way to Saint John I had the opportunity to read a book which had been sent in for review a while back and I would like to pass along my recommendations to all emerging artists, musicians or managers to pick up a copy of this informative guide to career navigation. The title of the book is "Artist Development, A distinctive guide to the music industry's lost art".

Artist Development by Eugene Foley

It is written by Eugene Foley, who in 1996 co-authored the acclaimed book "How to Make It In the Music Industry in 6 Months…And 18 Years", with former Columbia Records recording artist Steve Parry.

Foley and or his clients have contributed to various projects with Atlantic Records, Columbia, A&M, Epic, Arista, Universal, MCA, EMI, RCA, Sony, Lava, Interscope, Capitol, Mercury, Verve & Island/Def Jam, Narada Jazz, Polydor, Geffen and many others. His clients have earned nearly 40 Gold & Platinum records and three Grammy's for their overall accomplishments.

The book walks you through the complex process for achieving professional recognition within the industry in clear, intelligent and concise steps. There is little left untouched, with thorough "do and don't" chapters on press kits, hiring advisors/managers/agents/lawyers, publicity, publishing (and subsequent revenue streams), record labels, distribution companies and your options, marketing and making the most of attending music conferences. He offers a few "heads up" on touring pitfalls to help you skirt around potential problems as well as covering the benefits of endorsements, music videos and TV commercials, and most importantly having/creating the right songs. It is written by a business professional to help you become one, no matter what your field of expertise this book can steer you in the right direction. If you are in this business to get high or girls or both this read is not for you. If you are looking to make a long and profitable career in music get yourself a copy. The only topic I didn't find in the book was a chapter on stage presence and performance presentation which might end up being my next article.

Eugene now heads up Foley Entertainment Inc. a music industry consulting firm and licensed entertainment agency representing Artists/Groups, Producers, Labels, Engineers, Songwriters, Publishers, Managers, Session Musicians, Executives and Recording Studios. He has graciously forwarded us a few signed copies of this book for give away, thus, over the next few months we will randomly select winners from the artists, who post "song requests" through Songbridge.

You can buy a copy of "Artist Development" at Barnes and Noble stores, online B&N and via Foley Entertainment Inc.
